Around The Seaside Town of Penguin

We’re situated in the heart of Penguin, Northwest Tasmania. Less than 30 metres fromt the ocean, you can walk along the foreshore, swin, surf, dive or simply relax and put your feet up. There are several cafes and restaurants in Penguin or you can purchase your own food for the apartment.

Penguin is ideally located for exploring the Cradle coast/Northwest region of Tasmania – we are located an hour from Cradle Mountain National Park, are a short 25 minute drive from the Spirit of Tasmania terminal in the City of Devonport and 30 minutes from airports in Devonport and Burnie. Launceston is 1.5 hours by car and Hobart, Tasmania’s Capital City is 3.5 hours by car.

The most popular attraction undertaken by our guests are the Penguin Tours run from both Burnie and Devonport. These are guided viewing tours run free of charge on dusk from 1st of October until end of March.

Penguin Golf Club is nearby, beaches, bike riding, surf club, mountain bike trails, are among a myriad of holiday experiences.

On Sundays, Penguin hosts Tasmania’s largest undercover market, with stalls selling food and wine, woodcraft and second-hand goods.

Tour and Taste the Local Region

Scenic drives

The drive from Devonport to Stanley is said to be one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Australia with Penguin being almost in the middle, meaning you can drive either to Devonport or Stanley from Penguin.

Leaving Penguin you will meander through some wonderful farming areas and clean sandy beaches along the coast road through Ulverstone and on out to Devonport, a busy coastal city home of the Spirit of Tasmania. In the other direction the countryside varies between farmland and forests that stretch inland to the hills as you make your way to the old whaling and fishing township of Stanley, a cosey town with preserved colonial buildings and quaint cafes.

Cheese

Ashgrove Cheese is near Elizabeth Town, between Deloraine and Devonport. The Lactos Cheese Factory Cheese Shop is in Burnie.

Whisky

Also located in Burnie, Hellyers Road Distillery is Australia's largest single malt whisky distillery. Selected as Best New World Whisky in blind tasting held at Whisky Live in Paris, 2013.

Chocolate

According to House of Anver's; "Belgian Chocolate Skills & Tasmania's fresh clean climate combine to create the supreme chocolate experience." Located at Latrobe, a picturesque 30km drive from Penguin.

Cradle Mountain & Lake St Clair National Park

Part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the park is one of Australia's premier wilderness experiences. Take the two-hour stroll around the lake, or spend the day hiking Cradle Mountain's summit where icy streams cascade down the rugged mountain.

Leven Canyon

Leven Canyon is Tasmania’s deepest limestone ravine. From the carpark, an easy 20 minute walk will take you to a lookout 275m above the canyon floor offering breathtaking views of the canyon and surrounding countryside.  For the more adventurous, take a guided tour inside the canyon and caves. Nearby, a 6 hour hike will take you to Black Bluff summit.
